Penicillin Testing

Approximately 10% of the population is labeled as being allergic to penicillin.

However, less than 5% of these individuals are actually allergic.

Antibiotics in the penicillin family are among the safest and most effective. However, the label of a penicillin allergy often results in the use of other antibiotics, increasing the risk for antimicrobial resistance and adverse events.

Penicillin allergy testing is indicated in patients who are labeled as allergic to penicillin. The procedure involves skin testing with penicillin. If the skin tests are negative, oral amoxicillin is given, followed by observation for 1-2 hours in the office.

To make an appointment for penicillin testing, give us a call and let the scheduler know you specifically want penicillin testing.
