I heard about a new treatment that is an alternative to allergy shots. What is it?

Allergy immunotherapy (“allergy shots”) has been utilized for over 100 years to reduce allergy symptoms. The treatment involves administering the culprit allergens by way of subcutaneous (under the skin) injections over a period of 3-5 years. The result is to induce a tolerance, lessen symptoms, decrease need for medications, and improve quality of life. The disadvantages are the injections need to be given in the office over several years and there is some risk for reactions.

The new method of immunotherapy is done by taking the allergens orally with a tablet that dissolves rapidly in the mouth and is absorbed under the tongue. The major advantage of this treatment is it can be taken at home beginning 12 weeks before the pollen season and continuing through the season. Currently grass and ragweed pollens are approved for this treatment.
